 Intensive Physical Therapy Program

The Intensive Physical Therapy is a specialized program open to children of preschool age and up.

Our team of rehabilitation professionals evaluates the child at the beginning and end of each three-week therapy session.  With input from parents and child, an appropriate goal-oriented therapy program is designed for the child that is carried out by licensed and certified physical therapists.  Our therapists follow the TheraSuit™ Method of treatment developed by physical therapist Izabela Koscielny.

The child participates in the program for 3 or 4 hours a day, 5 days a week for a three-week period totaling up to 60 hours of intensive physical therapy.  Each treatment day includes a preparation phase with hot packs and/or massage, stretching, strengthening exercises, vestibular therapy, gait training, and functional exercises.  The TheraSuit™ and the Universal Exercise Unit are utilized during treatment.  The therapist may also incorporate other techniques or methods as appropriate including NDT (Neuro-Developmental Treatment), PNF (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation), Kinesio Taping, or Theratogs.

Specialized Equipment: The TheraSuit and The Universal Exercise Unit

The Therasuit™ serves as an external skeletal support for patients with cerebral palsy and other neuromuscular disorders.  Its major goals are the following: to improve proprioception (sensation from joints, ligament, and muscles); to reduce pathological reflexes; to restore proper patterns of movement; and to increase weight-bearing for normalized sensory input regarding posture and movement.

The Therasuit™ improves a patient’s ability to process vestibulo-proprioceptive input (information arriving to the vestibular system).  The vestibular system is responsible for organizing information regarding sensation, surroundings, movement of the body and limbs, and equilibrium.  It integrates and sends information back to muscles, joints and tendons to influence muscle tone, balance, and position of the body in space.  By helping to normalize this sensory input, the Therasuit™ can restore normal motor output.

Every individual requires practice to attain new skills.  The amount of practice required for patients with cerebral palsy and other neuromuscular disorders, however, is greatly increased.  The Therasuit™, when worn during physical therapy, can accelerate a patient’s progress.  In this manner, skills that are practiced can become more fluent and require less effort.  Therefore the Therasuit™ facilitates independence in the development of new gross and fine motor skills.

The Universal Exercise Unit (UEU) is a system of pulleys, straps, weights, and splints utilized to perform variety of exercises for improving strength, active range of motion (AROM), and muscle flexibility.

 The Kids Gym Program

The Kids Gym Program is a physical therapy program for patients who have completed an intensive physical therapy session and are looking to maintain the skills learned from the intensive program and to work on new functional goals.

This program is also for young patients who are not medically ready or medically appropriate for an intensive 3-week program, but can benefit from a less intense schedule yet aggressive physical therapy approach.

The patient participates in the Kids Gym Program for 2 to 3 times per week for 2 hours each visit.

 Traditional Therapy

Patients follow a non-intensive therapy schedule and can receive their services either center-based, home-based, or school-based.
