The Therasuit™ serves as an external skeletal support for patients with cerebral palsy and other neuromuscular disorders. Its major goals are the following: to improve proprioception (sensation from joints, ligament, and muscles); to reduce pathological reflexes; to restore proper patterns of movement; and to increase weight-bearing for normalized sensory input regarding posture and movement.
The Therasuit™ improves a patient’s ability to process vestibulo-proprioceptive input (information arriving to the vestibular system). The vestibular system is responsible for organizing information regarding sensation, surroundings, movement of the body and limbs, and equilibrium. It integrates and sends information back to muscles, joints and tendons to influence muscle tone, balance, and position of the body in space. By helping to normalize this sensory input, the Therasuit™ can restore normal motor output.
Every individual requires practice to attain new skills. The amount of practice required for patients with cerebral palsy and other neuromuscular disorders, however, is greatly increased. The Therasuit™, when worn during physical therapy, can accelerate a patient’s progress. In this manner, skills that are practiced can become more fluent and require less effort. Therefore the Therasuit™ facilitates independence in the development of new gross and fine motor skills.
The Universal Exercise Unit (UEU) is a system of pulleys, straps, weights, and splints utilized to perform variety of exercises for improving strength, active range of motion (AROM), and muscle flexibility.
